Vern Crandell

"I have kind of played with wood most of my life. My dad built the kitchen cupboards in one of our houses using only a circular saw and hand tools, so I guess I got the bug from him. As an adult I started doing some scrollsaw work as a way to ease the tension of my day job. Then my wife took decorative painting lessons which was done on wood so I ended up cutting the pieces for her. When she opened her own craft shop and decided to teach painting, it meant lots of pieces for me to cut. Eventually, her shop morphed into more of a quilt shop so my shop time became more of what I wanted to do.

I bought a decent lathe to replace my Shopsmith and started doing some turning. The turning bug bit me seriously and I have continued on my journey. Since retiring, I am able to spend more time in the shop. I like to turn a little bit of everything, from spin tops to pens, bowls, hollowforms, etc. I enjoy the challenge of doing segmented work, finding the hardest part is coming up with the pattern, although there is lots of work after that, too. I find WAM to be a great bunch of people, always constructive and willing to give insight and direction."

WAM is proud to honour Vern as our featured artist. He has been a member since the beginning, and always brings creative and interesting work to show us.
